New leadership. The bulletin reported the leadership elected at the 8th KAMMP Scientific Conference in Mombasa: Dr Mohamed Salim Shaush as President, succeeding Dr Ahmed Kalebi, with Dr Abdallah Bajaber and Dr Nabila Amin as Deputy Presidents. It also named Dr Ahmed Kamau (Secretary General), Dr Salma Naji (Assistant Secretary General), Dr Fatma Rashid (National Treasurer) and Sofia Sala (Assistant National Treasurer). It noted KAMMP's work since its founding in 1995: medical camps, humanitarian relief, the Al Ilm student aid programme, life-saving skills training in mosques with FIMA, and contributions to national health policy.
Saving mothers and newborns. An opinion piece drew on figures presented at the conference: every day in Kenya, 107 mothers and newborns die and 93 babies are stillborn, many from preventable causes. It pointed to faith and cultural concerns that keep some mothers from delivering in hospital, a subject KAMMP will keep working on with communities.
